On October 26, 2006, Ute Burkhardt, 37, was struck and killed by a truck while riding her bike.

Cycling was one of her passions, and she took great care in being a strong and safe rider. In November of 2006, on what would have been her 38th birthday, a word-of-mouth grass roots e-mail campaign prompted over 250 cyclists to gather and ride in her honor.

That ride was called
the First Annual Ute Burkhardt Memorial Ride.

In collaboration with Florida Bicycle Association and their involvement with the Share the Road campaign, our committee is driven by Ute’s fellow airline employees, her friends and zMotion Cycling…..all avid cyclists with a common dream……making the world a bike
friendly place.

We would like to encourage a safe bicycle friendly community through local and state advocacy, motorist and cyclist education, bike lane promotion and law enforcement awareness.

Our goal is to raise funds to benefit the Florida Bicycle Association, Florida’s leader in promoting bicycle safety, education and the Share the Road campaign.

Our mission is to:

  • Promote the Share the Road program.
  • To educate both bicyclists and motorists about safety issues
  • To voice the needs of bicyclists to state and local governments
  • To foster citizen advocacy
  • To encourage the creation of great on-road and off-road places to ride
  • To provide a statewide communications network for bicyclists
  • Encourage law enforcement education programs,
i.e., enforce the recently passed 3' rule
